WHAT YOU WORSHIP YOU BECOME
Romans 1:19-20 (LOVETT) God Himself has seen to it that evidence of His existence is plainly manifested to everyone . . . . They are revealed in the things He has made. Therefore no man has any excuse for failing to acknowledge Him . . . . Yet people have refused to acknowledge Him . . . . deliberately trading the truth about God for a lie, they offer their worship and service to created things, instead of the Creator . . . . Consequently they have become full of all kinds of wickedness, greed and hate.
We all worship something. We were created to worship. Worship is expressing adoration. Adoration is when we admire, esteem, exalt, and lift up.
- What you worship (admire) will capture your heart.
- What captures your heart you will imitate.
- What you imitate you will become.
You could admire someone’s wealth. Before you know it, money captures your heart. You look to someone rich to imitate. Before long you pick up the wrong characteristics.
1 Timothy 6:9-10 (NLV) Men who want lots of money [fame, sports, food] are tempted. They are trapped into doing all kinds of foolish things and things which hurt them. These things drag them into sin and will destroy them. The love of money [fame, sports, food] is the beginning of all kinds of sin.
Exodus 20:3 (NIV) Have no other gods before me.
. . . in place of me. – NIRV
When God is first you still may have some of the same desires. The difference is we refuse to compromise to get there. We want our lives to be pleasing to God.
Some of us don’t like what we’re becoming. So we need to check up on who or what we’re worshiping.
THE NOT SO GREAT EXCHANGE
We put other things in the place God belongs. We give them our money, our time, our devotion, our schedule. Maybe it is work, sports, a cause we believe in, or a hobby. We can enjoy it and even love it, just don’t love it above God! Don’t leave God saying:
- Man, I wish you would shout that way for me.
- I wish you would show up that early for me.
- I wish you would make that kind of a sacrifice for me.
WHAT GOD REALLY WANTS
Psalm 50:8-15 (NLT) I do not need the bulls from your barns or the goats from your pens. For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills . . . . Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High. Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.
God wants your affection. God loves you. He just wants you to love Him back, to be grateful for what He has done in your life and to include Him in your everyday life.
What God really wants is relationship with you. Why? Because as we allow ourselves to admire God, He begins to capture our heart. And so we desire to imitate Him and become more like Him. So we don’t experience the pain sin brings into our lives.
