Identity & Relationships Part 1

How Identity Destroys

Genesis 1:26-28 (NIV) God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.

People say, “Why doesn’t God stop this and that?” God rules in Heaven. We rule on the earth. We rule the earth best when we allow God to rule in our hearts. Sin makes us poor rulers.

Genesis 2:25 (YLT) Both of them [are] naked, the man and his wife, and they are not ashamed of themselves.

Even in their most vulnerable state Adam and Eve still have confidence. Their identity created a mindset focused on blessings not blemishes. Both had weaknesses—Eve was made from Adam. Each had their own unique abilities, strengths and giftings. But being one with God and each other filled in all weaknesses.

Genesis 3:5 (NIV) God knows that when you eat from it [sin against God] your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Genesis 3:13 (YLT) The woman saith, “The serpent hath caused me to forget.”

Satan destroyed her identity by destroying her view of God.

Genesis 3:7 (NIV) Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Their focus came off of God and onto self. They see how weak they are apart from God.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV) My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness . . . . I delight in weaknesses . . . . For when I am weak, then I am strong.

THE WRONG IDENTITY . . .
  • Robs you of joy.

Job 10:15 (NIV) If I am guilty—woe to me! Even if I am innocent, I cannot lift my head, for I am full of shame and drowned in my affliction.

  • Makes you hide yourself.

Genesis 3:10 (VOICE) When I heard the sound of You coming in the garden, I was afraid because I am naked. So I hid from You.

  • Makes you compare yourself.

Genesis 3:11-12 (NIV) “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Comparing will either fill you with pride or with envy.

  • Makes you prove yourself.

Never try to impress just be impressive. Do what God created you to do. Don’t prove, just serve.

Isaiah 61:7 (NIV) Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.
