Peace On Earth

During the Christmas season you hear a phrase quite often, “Peace on earth.”

Luke 2:13-14 (NIV) Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

Matthew 10:34 (NIV) Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace.

John 14:18, 27 (TLB) I will not abandon you or leave you as orphans in the storm . . . . I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart! And the peace I give isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

  • I could have peace if only __________. EXTERNAL
  • Peace is not the absence of something, it is the presence of someone. INTERNAL

Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  • Sar—the one in charge, Lord, chief, & general.
  • Shalom—rest, tranquility, wholeness, & contentment.

Ephesians 2:13-14 (NIV) Now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For [Christ] himself is our peace . . . .

Jesus is our peace. You’ll never have peace apart from Jesus. Jesus gives us the ability to rest. On earth you can have peace.

1. Get under the Lordship of Jesus.

There are a lot of people who call Jesus Lord, but are not under His Lordship. They live life their way. Peace is the fruit of living life Jesus’s way.

Isaiah 32:17-18 (NIV) The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.

2. Bring Jesus into every situation.

Many Christians live two separate lives:

  1. Sunday our spiritual life.
  2. Monday-Saturday our natural life.

Peace is found when these two come together.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 (NLT) Now may the Lord of peace himself give you his peace [on Sundays?] at all times and in every situation. [How] The Lord be with you.

3. Keep your mind on Jesus.

Let the prince of peace invade your thoughts, praise, & words.

Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV) You [God] will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts You.

Romans 15:13 (NIV) The God of hope [will] fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.

Isaiah 43:2-3 (NIV) When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
