THE PURPOSE OF PENTECOST
Pentecost means fifty. The Feast of Pentecost is fifty days after the Feast of First Fruits. On Pentecost, Jesus sent what the Father had promised.
Numbers 11:29 (NLT) Moses replied . . . “I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit upon them all!”
Acts 2:1-35 (NIV) When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? . . . . 14 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully . . . .This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “‘In the last days [of the Old Covenant], God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days [of the New Covenant], and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above [star] and signs on the earth below [miracles], blood [crucifixion] and fire and billows of smoke [decent into hell]. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord [resurrection]. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved . . . .” 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’”
What is the purpose of the gift of the Holy Spirit? To make God’s enemies a footstool for your feet.
Luke 10:19 (NIV) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
Hebrews 2:8-9 (LDB) You have put us in charge of everything there is! In putting us in charge of everything, God hasn’t left anything that is not subject to us. But at the present time we don’t yet see ourselves ruling over everything. But what we do see is Jesus.
The Holy Spirit empowers us to bring into subjection everything subjected to Jesus. The Holy Spirit will give you words of wisdom, words of knowledge, prophecy, gifts of healing, gifts of miracles, discerning of spirits, tongues and interpretation–all for the purpose of bringing things into subjection to Christ.
The Enemies of God–Things Subject To Us:
- 1. Sin (Depravity) – NOW
- 2. Sickness (Disease) – NOW
- 3. Satan (Demons) – NOW
- 4. Sleep (Death) – At the Return of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:26).
1 John 3:8 (NIV) The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.
God wants to empower your life, by the Spirit of God, so you can trample over the enemies of God. If we’re going to warn people about false miracles, we better be able to produce real miracles!
Acts 1:8 (GNT) When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me . . . . to the ends of the earth.
Power – Dunamis – Dynamite working power, warlike power, the Almighty’s energy, the anointing, a tangible transmittable substance from the heavenly world.
Witness – An evidence producer, which confirms and substantiates.
The purpose of being filled with the Holy Spirit is NOT to just “speak in tongues,” it’s to give PROOF of the resurrection!
